The Hollyburn Heritage Community requires Yellow Cedar to be used in their cabins on Cypress Mountain. We are very happy to supply them with what they need! This picture looks like a fairytale with the beautiful cabin in the snow
Though it doesn’t look like it… this is Yellow Cedar! Finished with a traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban.
The Yellow Cedar is charred on the outside, the burnt portion is scraped off and then finished with a few coats of varathane to avoid any soot rubbing off on admirers. A painstakingly long process, but worth the beautiful finished product!
Shou Sugi Ban originated in 18th century Japan. This is a particularly striking method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. Traditionally, this practice is used to weatherproof it. The wood is burned until the surface is charred, and then coated with natural oil.
Yellow Cedar deck covering, rafters are finished with a stain, everything else finished with Shou Sugi Ban. Stay tuned for an updated photo with a new patio and garden upgrades!
