  • What Finishes Do You Offer?

We have three different finishes to offer you: mill-finish, bandsawn finish, and smooth-surface (S2S) finish. Depending on your project, you might need a variation of all three! The more information you are able to provide us when placing an order, the better we will be able to serve you. Keep in mind that the photos below are examples and won’t be an exact match to your order.

Mill-finish means that some pieces could have dark brown areas on the surface and might have visible saw lines. This is standard when receiving items straight from the source! We like mill-finish as it gives each piece some character and personality as it weathers. This is typically the quickest and most cost-effective finish.

    Bandsawn Finish

If you would prefer a bandsawn finish to show off the beautiful nature of Yellow Cedar we do provide that for a nominal fee. A bandsawn finish is not “smooth”, it is slightly rough to the touch but is a much better surface to apply stain to.

    Smooth-Surface (S2S)

At your request, we can smooth-surface two sides (S2S) of your order. Each piece will be run through a machine to create a smooth surface to complete your project. When choosing this finish, please allow extra time for your order to be completed.

  • What about sustainability?

We firmly believe in the sustainable harvesting of British Columbia’s renewable resources. All of the Yellow Cedar that Lumber Store offers is certified sustainably harvested through the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

  • Can I visit your location and choose my own wood?

LumberStore is a part of an industrial wood remanufacturing facility and our insurance does not allow us to have customer visits. Rest assured that your lumber order is hand inspected to ensure that you receive the finest quality of the grade purchased. If you have any concerns, please contact our Yard Manager.

Yellow Cedar

  • Yellow Cedar vs. Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar has built quite the reputation for itself over the last decade. Known for its warm colours, pleasant aromas, and durability, Red Cedar is highly sought after for indoor and outdoor projects.

Then why are we offering Yellow Cedar instead of Red? We believe that Yellow Cedar is an underrated species for outdoor projects. This species boasts superior durability, strength, natural preservatives, and a greater resistance to rot, fungus, and insects – and of course, the familiar cedar smell! Yellow Cedar grows with a finer grain and tighter growth rings meaning it is less likely to twist and will take nails and screws without splitting. Where strength and durability matter, Yellow Cedar is our first choice.

  • How are Yellow Cedar and Red Cedar Different?

Both Western Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar are exceptionally durable and weather resistant. They both have a very pleasant aromas. Both species are filled with natural preservatives called tannins, giving them great durability. These natural preservatives repel against moisture, insects, and decay.

Western Red Cedar is a softer and more lightweight wood than Yellow Cedar. Known for its warm colour and dark, rich heartwood. Western Red Cedar is excellent at absorbing stain since it is a softwood and is also pitch and resin free.

Yellow Cedar, which has many different names such as Alaskan Yellow Cedar and Sitka Cypress, is a much harder wood than Western Red Cedar. It’s actually a Cypress tree and not a Cedar. It’s used for building aspects where strength and durability are key factors. It takes nails and screws without splitting and very rarely twists.

  • Can I Stain Yellow Cedar?

If a weathered silver-grey finish is not desired we recommend a penetrating paraffin natural oil stain that contains UV blockers. Paints and solid stains are not recommended with Yellow Cedar.

Prepping new cedar wood is important to stain life and performance. New Yellow Cedar wood that is smooth surfaced should be cleaned using a sodium percarbonate wood cleaner to remove mill glaze and other contaminants that may have infiltrated the wood during construction. This is not necessary if the surface is rough sawn, providing the surface is relatively clean.

Once the new cedar wood has been cleaned the wood will appear darker. While the wood is still wet, apply a wood brightener to restore the cedar wood’s original colour. Brightening wood after it has been cleaned will also open the wood pores to allow the conditioning oils to penetrate better.

We recommend you wait 3+ months to stain new Yellow Cedar wood surfaces to allow the wood to slightly weather, creating an ideal porous surface that will hold the stain better. (Always follow the stain brand’s directions).

Rough sawn Yellow Cedar is generally not used for horizontal decking surface, but rather verticals such as fencing, wood siding, etc. This side of the wood does not have a mill glaze and is very absorbent. As long as the wood has a low moisture content (after sitting for 3 months) it can be stained right away.

Many wood stains have difficulty penetrating new dense woods like Yellow Cedar. If a stain does not penetrate the wood it will remain on the surface and become susceptible to peeling and flaking. The best wood stains for new cedar are deep penetrating paraffin oil based stains that are thinner in viscosity. Stains for new cedar wood should penetrate deep into the wood to condition the wood cells and provide protection from UV fading and moisture damage.
