Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

  • Do you carry framing or construction material?

We do not carry any plywood, framing, or construction grade material (finished SPF). At the moment, we only provide rough cut lumber and timbers.

  • I’m looking to buy firewood, can you help me?

We are proud to have very little waste leftover from our projects, but this does mean that we have no firewood available for purchase. We do have self-contained, portable campfires available – the Beach Fire! Available in two sizes, these are a fun alternative to firewood. Please follow any local burning and campfire regulations in your area.

  • I only need a few pieces, is there a minimum order quantity?

There are no minimum order quantities. We provide premium lumber, whether you need one board or one hundred!

  • Can you deliver to a residential address?

Absolutely! There are no issues delivering to a residence. We do require that someone is available to help unload any deliveries to a home address.

  • What will my order look like?

All orders are supplied with a standard bandsaw finish. This shows off the natural beauty of the wood, but also leaves the flexibility to finish your project however you like! Bandsaw finish is not “smooth”, but is slightly rough to the touch. If you are interested in a different finish, such as a more rough and rustic look with mill-finish, please contact us to place an order.

Bandsaw finish removes 1/8″ from each face. For example, if you order a 6″ x 6″ post, it will be actual size 5-3/4″ x 5-3/4″. You can specify in the notes section when you place an order if you’d prefer rough cut items (mill finish).

The photos below are examples of the available finishes. Check out our Product Blog on Bandsaw vs. Mill Finish for some more examples.

Rest assured that your lumber order is hand inspected to ensure that you receive the finest quality of the grade purchased. If you have any concerns, please contact our Yard Manager.

Yellow Cedar

  • How are Yellow Cedar and Red Cedar Different?

Both Western Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar are exceptionally durable and weather resistant. They both have a very pleasant aromas. Both species are filled with natural preservatives called tannins, giving them great durability. These natural preservatives repel against moisture, insects, and decay.

Western Red Cedar is a softer and more lightweight wood than Yellow Cedar. Known for its warm colour and dark, rich heartwood. Western Red Cedar is excellent at absorbing stain since it is a softwood and is also pitch and resin free.

Yellow Cedar, which has many different names such as Alaskan Yellow Cedar and Sitka Cypress, is a much harder wood than Western Red Cedar. Did you know it’s actually a Cypress tree and not a Cedar? It’s used for building aspects where strength and durability are key factors. It takes nails and screws without splitting and very rarely twists.

Wood Grades

  • What grades can I purchase online?

At this time, only Appearance Grade and #1 & Btr Boxed Heart are available for online purchases.

  • What is #1 & Btr Boxed Heart?

Timbers graded as #1 & Btr offer great appearance and strength properties. Any knots will be sound and well-spaced, no loose knots or rot allowed. This is a versatile grade that can be used in many kinds of applications. Boxed heart means that the heart center (pith) of the tree remains in the timber when it is sawn. This is done by squaring up a log – taking the edges off – and leaving the heart center. Free of heart center timbers are more costly due to the size of log required, however, FOHC will have less twisting and less serious checking/splitting as they dry.

If you need free of heart center (FOHC), please call us directly. Please note that all timbers are provided green and will air dry over time.

  • What is Appearance Grade lumber?

Appearance Grade lumber is suitable for any outdoor application. Any knots will stay fixed, the wood will not have rot, there will be very little wane (missing wood where the bark of the tree was). There will be no bug holes or similar bad looking defects. This grade may have more “character” than high grade lumber, but Appearance Grade Yellow Cedar maintains the rot resistance and strength properties.

Please contact us directly if you are in need of high grade (Premium Clear) Yellow Cedar.

  • What if I need a higher grade or clear lumber?

Contact us directly to get a quote for different lumber grades! We have different grade options available and would be happy to discuss your project needs.
